Hospital Bed to Fashion Brand: A TRUE STORY.

Hospital Bed to Fashion Brand: A TRUE STORY.

After a night out celebrating my birthday with friends and family, I woke up with a smile on my face — a smile that was quickly shattered when my nurse checked my skin and discovered a stage 4 pressure ulcer. The wound went right down to the bone. My independence — something I fought so hard to keep — was suddenly gone.

For the next four years, I would spend most of my days confined to my bed, healing that wound. But even during that time, I held on to one powerful thought: I will continue my clothing line no matter what.

While I was lying in bed, I began researching and sourcing materials that would make a real difference in people’s lives — especially for those, like me, who face unique physical challenges. That’s when I discovered Coolmax, a high-performance technical fabric designed to regulate temperature.

After undergoing double skin flap surgery, I spent two and a half months on a sand bed in the hospital — a 90-degree bed, in a small, hot room. My body couldn’t regulate temperature due to my spinal cord injury, and the discomfort was intense. But during that time, I was also driven. I kept searching for materials, kept designing, kept dreaming.

Then I tried on a shirt I’d had made from the Coolmax material — and it changed everything. The fabric was silky smooth, soft like butter on the skin, and easy to get on and off thanks to the snap buttons. Most importantly, it worked.

When I went into the hallway, where the air was cold, it kept me warm. When I returned to my hot hospital room, it cooled me down. That shirt was a breakthrough. It was comfort, confidence, and independence — all in one.

Encouraged, I took my savings and invested in a production run of black and white dress shirts, designed for both wheelchair-seated bodies and expecting mothers, ensuring comfort for everyone — even babies in the womb. I had them folded, tagged, and packaged right from my home. With the help of my friends, family, and caregivers, these shirts were shipped all across Canada — all from between four walls.

That’s why when I say “Never give up,” I mean it.

Nothing will ever stop me from living my dream and creating beautiful, functional, inclusive fashion. I used my disability as an ability — and today, seeing so many people wearing my designs fills me with pride and purpose.

So if you’re facing your own challenges, remember this: you can do it too. No matter the circumstances, no matter how hard the journey — never, ever give up.
